Can I Make Changes To My Home Using Money From An Insurance Claim?

March 12, 2019 | Blog

After a loss, when repairs must take place, you may wonder if improvements or new materials can be used and if the insurance money you are receiving will cover those changes you would like to make.  There are key things you will want to know and consider when you are dealing with an insurance claim and restoring damaged property.

What Is Covered?

  • After a disaster, you will need to check in immediately with your insurance to see what is covered under the policies you have put into place and to file a claim.
  • If the damage is a covered event, you are owed the money needed to repair your home to pre-loss condition.

What is Considered Pre-Loss Condition?

  • Anything that is damaged must be put back the way it was before the loss. It is important to note that only those items or areas affected will be entitled to repairs in your claim.  However, most insurance policies state that after repairs, the affected area should “be uniform and consistent.”  In other words, if you had a portion of your cabinets destroyed, you are entitled to new cabinets that match your existing ones.

Can I Use Different Materials?  Can I Do Some Upgrades Using My Claim?  Can I Keep Extra Insurance Money?

  • Although it is not suggested, if you chose to downgrade materials for a project, you will not receive the difference in cash.
  • Upgrades or replacement of things not directly destroyed and put into the loss claim are the responsibility of the homeowner.
  • Keeping extra insurance money, not paying your deductible, using your claims check for other things, or replacing or upgrading things that were not part of the damage of the claim, is considered insurance fraud. These can cost you a fraud charge, criminal record, or denial of future insurance across the board including health, car, etc.
